American Turners Competition

The Turn Verein Scrapbook – 2019.072.001 This is a scrapbook cataloguing the events and news surrounding the Turn Verein Gymnasium, organized in 1866, a sort of arts and athletics club that had a chapter in Lawrence at the time. The events catalogued fall between 1948 and 1961, events such as volleyball, track, cabarets, plays, dances and a myriad of other social and sporting activities that took place at the gymnasium. This scrapbook is filled, front to back, with newspaper clippings used to catalogue and date these events, and the sheer amount of these clippings creates a very comprehensive look at the activity of the Turn Verein during the 1948-1961 time period. Tucked within the book there is even a third place ribbon from the 1963 American Turners Competition in Ohio, once worn by a member of the Turn Verein, listed under Class as "Publicity" and dated 6/20/63. Attached to the ribbon is a parcel tag with the return name and address listed as B. A. Pietuchoff/Lawrence Turnverein/Lawrence, Massachusetts.
