TITLE: Swept Away
RATING: R
COUNTRY: Italy
DIRECTOR: Lina W
YEAR: 1974
‑LANGUAGE: Italian w/ English subtitles
RUNNING TIME: 1 hour 58 minutes

Director Lina Wertmuller’s cult classic black comedy about the conflicts of social class begins with a group of wealthy people enjoying a beautiful day on a luxurious yacht, which ends abruptly in a shipwreck. The only two survivors -one a pampered, blonde-haired Northern Italian woman, the other an uneducated Sicilian deckhand- find themselves marooned upon a deserted island. The two initially assume their accustomed class relationship, she aloof and expecting to be served, and he resentfully serving her. But then a gradual realization of their circumstances results in a power shift and a roller coaster ride of unbridled, raw emotion. Swept Away, not to be confused with the 2002 version of the same name starring Madonna, was a crowd pleasing staple of foreign film festivals of the 1970’s.
